Your UTV is a powerful tool and toy, but it’s still a machine that you need to take care of. Like any vehicle, preventative maintenance will help you keep it working longer and better. We here at Tracy Motorsports know that your UTV is valuable, whether it’s for work or for play, so we’ve put together some more UTV maintenance tips. If you have any questions, or you’d like to see the UTVs we have for sale, contact our store in Tracy, California, today!

Battery

Your battery is an incredibly important component, both for keeping your electronic dials and readouts working, but also for starting your engine to begin with. Make sure to check your battery posts every month or so to make sure they’re clean of dirt and corrosion. If they get corroded multiple months in a row, you may need a new battery. And of course, during any long-term storage, remove the battery entirely and hook it to a trickle charger to keep it from dying entirely.

Spark Plugs

Your spark plugs provide the ignition necessary to begin the internal combustion that runs your engine, so check them regularly, especially if you’re having trouble starting your engine. First, disconnect the battery entirely. Then remove the engine cover and use a spark plug wrench to take out a plug. Check that the metal gaps are clean and dry and that the ceramic casing is in one piece.

Driveline

Every UTV has a driveline which distributes engine power to the wheels. Whether this is a chain or belt is determined by your vehicle’s manufacturer and model, but either way it can get stuck if you don’t care for it properly. You’ll need to regularly apply an appropriate lubricant and double-check the tension to ensure it’s not too tight or too loose. If it is, we recommend bringing it to a professional mechanic or technician for adjustment and repair.

Radiator Cap And Coolant

Your radiator cap is an underappreciated part of your UTV. It does more than just keep your coolant in its tank! It’s actually responsible for pulling coolant from the tank into the engine. If the cap is loose and the seal isn’t properly tightened, your UTV’s performance may suffer and it can be in danger of an overheat. Check your cap regularly and replace or repair as necessary.

The coolant itself is what keeps your engine from overheating and shutting down, or worse. It won’t need replacing often, if ever, but you’ll want to top it off regularly. If you find a coolant leak, you’ll want to take your UTV in for service.
