How to Launch a JET SKI® From a Trailer
Launching your JET SKI® from a trailer is an essential skill you’ll need to begin each day’s adventures on the water. It’s easy enough as long as you take your time and pay attention. Before You Leave The House
Make sure you have everything packed before you leave the house. This includes life jackets, sunblock, whistles and the JET SKI key. Fire up your engine before you leave. If your engine won’t start, you’ll want to learn the news in your own driveway. Check your drain plugs and straps before heading out. It’s never a bad idea to add redundant straps, because even expensive straps can break.
Arriving at the Ramp
Gas prices on the water can be exorbitant, so fill up at the gas station before you get to the launch. Be sure to also pick up plenty of bottled water and other supplies.
When you arrive at the ramp, pull into a parking spot or loading area first. You want to have enough time to launch without inconveniencing other boaters. Check your drain plug for the first time. It should be finger tight, and doesn’t need to be overtightened. If your JET SKI has more than one drain plug, check them all. You can remove your rear straps, but the front strap needs to remain attached until your ski is touching the water.
Backing Up the Trailer
Backing up a short trailer takes a little practice, and you should go early enough to take your time. Disconnect the trailer lights from the vehicle, go slow and stay straight. If you feel like you’re going into the water crooked, you probably are. Pull up and straighten up before backing in again. You shouldn’t back your tow vehicle into the water past the exhaust pipe. If you can hear the sound of water bubbling, pull forward. Disconnect the craft from the front hook and push off.
Loading Back Up
After you’re done for the day, approach the trailer as slowly as possible and aim for the center of the bunks. If you have brakes on your ski you should be able to get your ski moving almost perfectly still. Once you’re in contact with the trailer connect the front strap and have someone ratchet you up. Pull out your drain plugs and make sure that you’re not taking on extra water. You should only have a trickle of water come out when you remove your plugs. Reconnect your trailer lights and secure your straps. Check them at least one more time before you go home.
