Cleaning your boat not only keeps it looking its best, but it can also help your boat to last longer and perform better. However, some owners are not sure where to start when it comes to boat cleaning. That is why Tracy Motorsports has created this guide to cleaning your boat.

Preparation

Start by gathering all your supplies, including brushes, a hose, an environmentally-friendly marine wash compatible with your model, chamois cloths, towels, soft-bristle brushes, a mop, a long-handled brush, polish or wax, a bucket, and sponges. Remove all personal items and throw away any trash. Items you plan to keep on the boat should be stowed somewhere out of the way.

Rinsing

We recommend that you rinse your boat after each trip, even if you don’t plan to do a total cleaning. This is especially important if your boat was exposed to saltwater. Regular rinsing discourages grime build-up and makes future cleanings easier.

Cleaning the Outside

Grab the marine wash and a soft-bristled brush. Make sure that whatever cleaning products you use are gentle enough that they won’t remove the wax or damage the boat. We recommend cleaning in small sections so that you can rinse off the soap before it starts to dry.

Wax the Boat

Once you are done washing your boat, you can move on to waxing. Waxing creates a protective layer against dirt, so be sure to wax your boat at least twice a season. Make sure that you use boat wax rather than car wax, as car wax is not formulated to protect your vehicle against the kinds of conditions typically experienced by a boat.

Final Touches

Now it is time to put the finishing touches on your boat cleaning job. Start by cleaning the upholstery and windows. Be sure to use gentle products that won’t damage your boat. Next, use a vacuum or broom to remove dirt and debris from the floor of your boat. Follow this up by washing the carpets, cleaning/polishing the metalwork, and removing any hard water stains. Don’t forget to clean your boat’s trailer as well. Finally, inspect your handiwork to make sure that you didn’t miss any spots.
