Riding Prep & Practice

Your quad may have four wheels, but it isn’t the same as driving a car. It functions more like a motorcycle in the sense that you straddle the seat and use a clutch and throttle. You’ll want to practice accelerating, braking, turning, and steering. It’s best to ride with a partner or group so if something happens, someone will be able to call for help. Always be sure your ATV is stocked with a first-aid kit, tool repair kit, a flashlight, water, and snacks. Other key items include a GPS or phone with charger, a patch kit for flats, a map, and a compass.

A major part of the preparation process is planning where to ride your four-wheeler. You want to have a good idea of what type of terrain you’ll be facing. Terrain can be wet and slippery or rocky and rough. Follow an experienced rider for your first couple of rides. They’ll be able to lead you along a path of less resistance, which will reduce your chances of rolling over.

Essential Gear

Adapting To The Trail

Once you’re riding the trails, you should be using proper etiquette. Slow down when you’re in the presence of animals, hikers, and other riders. Speaking of other riders, give them plenty of space when crossing paths. If you’re passing by private lands, campgrounds, or residence, be courteous and don’t invade their space.

It’s inevitable that you’ll encounter ruts, so use care when navigating these tricky areas. You want to avoid a rollover at all costs, so slow down and put both wheels on one side of your quad into the rut as you ride along its path. Keep the wheels on the edge as much as you can, then adjust your speed and approach as you turn through them. As long as you don’t attempt to speed right over them, you should be fine. The key to adapting to the trail as a beginner is to take things slow and learn your limits.

General Safety Guidelines

You’re just about ready to conquer the trails on your ATV. There are some other general safety guidelines to keep in mind. Most importantly, don’t take unnecessary risks on your four-wheeler. Under no circumstances should you drink or use drugs before a ride. This might be considered common sense for most people, but it’s still worth noting. When you ride your quad, you’re operating heavy machinery that requires you to maintain your focus and reflexes. Never push yourself past your limits. Take breaks to stretch your legs, rest your eyes, and keep hydrated.
